‘I Have No Regrets’ — Atiku Fires Back at Obasanjo, Defends Stand Against Third-Term Agenda.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has declared that he has “no apology whatsoever” for opposing former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s controversial third-term bid, insisting that he chose to defend Nigeria’s Constitution and democracy over personal loyalty.

Atiku’s reaction came after Obasanjo recently described selecting him as his running mate in the 1999 presidential election as the biggest political mistake of his political career.

Responding through a statement issued by his media aide, Phrank Shaibu, the former vice president dismissed Obasanjo’s remarks as another attempt to rewrite history. He maintained that standing against the third-term agenda remains one of the proudest decisions of his political life, stressing that his actions were driven by patriotism and commitment to democratic principles.

According to Atiku, the struggle against the proposed constitutional amendment was never about personal differences with Obasanjo but about safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy and ensuring that no individual places himself above the nation’s Constitution.

He declared that “no individual is bigger than the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” adding that preserving constitutional democracy for future generations was a duty he could not compromise.

Atiku further recalled that he stood firmly behind Obasanjo during his period of imprisonment and played a significant role in his political resurgence, which eventually led to his emergence as Nigeria’s president in 1999. While affirming that he has no regrets about supporting the former president, Atiku insisted that history must not be distorted for political convenience.

The latest exchange has further deepened the long-standing political rift between the two former allies, whose relationship has remained strained since their fallout over the controversial third-term agenda during the Obasanjo administration.
