Tinubu Backed Me Despite Calls for My Removal Over Staff’s Death – Umahi

Minister of Works, David Umahi, has disclosed that President Bola Tinubu stood firmly behind him despite public calls for his removal following the death of one of his staff members.

Umahi made the revelation while speaking at a public event, where he recounted how the incident sparked widespread reactions on social media, with some individuals urging President Tinubu to dismiss him from office.

According to the minister, the unfortunate death of his staff member was politicised by critics, but President Tinubu refused to bow to the pressure. Instead, he said the President encouraged him to remain focused on delivering critical infrastructure projects across the country.

Umahi stressed that leadership should not be dictated by social media pressure, insisting that ultimate authority belongs to God.

“Power and might don’t belong to social media; they belong to God. When people took the death of one of my staff and started playing politics with it, they said the President should sack me, but the President surprised all of them and said, ‘Dave, go and build more roads,'” Umahi said.

The minister described the President’s response as a demonstration of confidence in his leadership and commitment to the administration’s infrastructure agenda.

He reiterated his resolve to continue executing road and bridge projects nationwide, saying he remains committed to fulfilling the mandate entrusted to him by President Tinubu despite criticism from some quarters.
