Igbo Group Rejects Claims of South-East Backing Tinubu’s 2027 Re-Election Bid

An Igbo socio-cultural organisation based in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the Igbo Community Association, has cautioned South-East political leaders against making what it described as premature and misleading claims that the region has endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term in the 2027 presidential election.

In a statement signed by its President-General, Mr. Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe, the association dismissed assertions that President Tinubu would enjoy overwhelming support across the five South-East states, insisting that such claims do not reflect the views of the Igbo people.

The group specifically mentioned Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, and Senate Deputy Chief Whip, Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi, stating that they do not have the mandate to speak on behalf of the entire South-East.

According to the statement, the association said the claim that President Tinubu would sweep all five South-East states in the 2027 election was “completely detached from the prevailing conditions on the ground.”

“The Igbo Community Association FCT wishes to set the record straight for the public and the political establishment that neither Governor Hope Uzodimma, Minister David Umahi, nor Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi serves as the spokesperson for the Igbo ethnic group,” the statement read.

It further alleged that the political endorsements being made by some South-East leaders were driven by personal political interests rather than the collective will of the people.

“Elected political appointees and ruling-party actors do not hold a mandate to declare a political consensus on behalf of millions of Igbo citizens. These endorsements represent the personal political preservation strategies of a few office holders seeking to retain favour with the Presidency. They do not reflect the true political stance, socio-economic realities, or grassroots sentiment of the South-East region,” the association stated.

The group urged public office holders from the South-East to focus on governance, constitutional responsibilities, and addressing the economic challenges facing their constituents instead of making political declarations on behalf of the region.

The association also maintained that many people across the South-East remain dissatisfied with the performance of the current Federal Government on key economic and governance issues, adding that the electorate would make its decision independently during the 2027 general election.
