School Security Guard Jailed for Sexually Abusing 10-Year-Old Pupil in Abia.

A Family Court sitting at the Magistrate Court in Aba, Abia State, has sentenced a 30-year-old school security guard, Chidiebere Kalu, to one year imprisonment for sexually abusing a 10-year-old female pupil of Radiant Glory Academy, Umuichichi, Aba.

The judgment was delivered on August 5, 2026, following the prosecution of the case, which stemmed from reported incidents involving the child within the school premises. The matter was brought before the authorities after the victim’s family reported the alleged abuse, leading to criminal proceedings.

The court found Kalu guilty on two counts bordering on indecent assault and instilling fear in a minor.

For the first count, the court sentenced him to one year imprisonment without the option of a fine. On the second count, he was sentenced to one year imprisonment with an option of a ₦200,000 fine. The court, however, ordered that both sentences run concurrently.

Reacting to the judgment, the Vivacious Development Initiative (VIDI), in collaboration with the Child Protection Network (CPN), Abia State Chapter, described the conviction as a significant milestone in the fight against child abuse and the protection of children’s rights.

The organisations said the judgment reinforces the commitment of the justice system to hold perpetrators of sexual abuse accountable and serves as a warning that crimes against children will not go unpunished. They also commended the victim’s family and all stakeholders involved in ensuring that justice was served.
