Supreme Court Prohibits Use of ‘Barrister’ as Official Name Prefix

The Supreme Court has directed all legal practitioners and court officials to stop using the title “Barrister” as a prefix in official documents and correspondence involving the apex court.

The directive was approved by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, and communicated in a circular signed by the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Kabir Akanbi. The new policy became effective immediately upon its release.

According to the circular, the decision is part of measures to promote consistency and maintain the professional standards expected in the administration of justice. Lawyers, court registrars, and litigation officers have been instructed to remove the title from all official records, filings, identification materials, and communications submitted to the court.

The Supreme Court called on all affected individuals to comply with the directive, noting that the policy is intended to ensure uniformity in official court practices and strengthen institutional professionalism.
