He Planted, He Tended, And The Shade Came Early – By Akwaugo Mmadinaobi Ngozi Amulu
THIS SHADE IS FOR THE WORLD
The trees Governor Alex Otti planted are already giving shade.
And that is not by chance.
A tree gives shade when somebody plants it, waters it, tends it and protects it. Governor Otti did not simply plant and walk away. He stayed with the work. He nurtured it. He built the foundations. And now, the early shade is becoming visible.
As our elders say, when you take care of the root, the leaves will not forget you.
Look around Abia today with your own eyes and you will see the signs.
ROADS ARE COMING BACK TO LIFE.
Port Harcourt Road in Aba, once neglected for decades, has been reconstructed and returned to service. The original road had suffered prolonged deterioration and abandonment before the present reconstruction.
Ossah Road in Umuahia has been transformed into a major six-lane boulevard, while major roads across Aba and Umuahia have been reconstructed or upgraded as part of the wider infrastructure renewal.
The Omenuko Bridge and other critical infrastructure have also formed part of the administration’s effort to improve connectivity and movement across the State.
This is not just about concrete and asphalt.
When roads work, businesses move.
When businesses move, people earn.
When people earn, communities breathe again.
THEN CAME A NEW TRANSPORT ERA.
The Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal in Umuahia can accommodate more than 340 buses at a time.
And Abia’s Green Shuttle fleet has now reached 40 electric buses.
The first 20 were commissioned in January 2026, while another 20 were commissioned at the Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal in August. (Alex Otti)
But Governor Otti is not stopping there.
30 more electric buses are on the way.
The State has also set a target of 100 electric buses by the end of Q1 2027.
That is what it looks like when a vision keeps moving.
And because the ground is becoming better for business, other people are beginning to plant their own trees.
INVESTORS ARE COMING.
At Osisioma Industrial Layout in Aba, Ultimum Beverages commissioned its new multimillion-dollar production facility after committing over $35 million to the project, with a pledge to increase the investment to $100 million.
That $100 million is a planned expansion, not money already invested — and that distinction matters.
The company has said the facility will create jobs and stimulate activity throughout its wider economic ecosystem.
Then came ORIS Signature Hotel in Aba.
As of September 28, 2026, the 55-room hotel has been commissioned, adding another significant private investment to Aba’s hospitality sector. Governor Otti described its completion as evidence of what can happen when enterprise meets an improving business environment.
And there is more on the horizon.
The proposed Aba Commercial Smart City occupies 140 hectares in the Osisioma axis. Its promoters project that the development could create more than 25,000 direct jobs and 100,000 indirect jobs across construction, ICT, manufacturing, retail and related sectors.
That is a projected 125,000 jobs — not jobs already created — and that distinction must remain clear.
As our elders also say:
When the road is straight, the market will be full.
Today, the story is changing.
Businesses are returning. New investments are arriving. Infrastructure is opening doors. And opportunities that once seemed distant are beginning to look possible again.
One good head clears the path for many feet.
This is what happens when government moves beyond promises and begins to build systems — roads, transport infrastructure, investment platforms and an environment where private enterprise can grow.
The shade may still be young.
But it is already visible.
And if this is what the early years of planting, tending and nurturing have produced, imagine what can grow when the work continues.
The tree was planted.
The roots were strengthened.
The branches are spreading.
And the shade is coming.
This shade is not for Abia alone.
This shade is for the world.
