There is a dangerous tendency in politics to mistake absence from office for absence from political relevance, and to mistake a new political ticket for a new political career. That is the fundamental error behind the attempt to describe Rt. Hon. Emeka Atuma as a “rookie politician.” Nothing could be further from the historical record. Atuma’s political journey did not begin with the 2026 APC primary, and his political identity cannot be reduced to his present aspiration for the Abia Central Senatorial District. He has been active in elective politics for more than two decades, beginning with his election to the House of Representatives in 2003, where he represented Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency from 2003 to 2007. Contemporary records of the 5th National Assembly identify Atuma as the representative for Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South during that period.

2003–2007: ATUMA ENTERED THE NATIONAL POLITICAL ARENA

In 2003, Rt. Hon. Emeka Atuma was elected to the Federal House of Representatives on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), representing Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency. That alone settles one question: a politician who has served a full term in the National Assembly cannot honestly be described as a political rookie.

But his significance goes beyond occupying a seat in Abuja. His representation was anchored on constituency intervention and development. During his period in office, he was associated with efforts to attract federal interventions to his constituency, including road rehabilitation and renovation, school renovation, erosion-control interventions and streetlight projects, among other development initiatives.

That is the kind of representation that should be judged by its connection to the people. Legislative office is not merely about sitting in the chamber, attending proceedings and collecting allowances. It is also about understanding constituency needs, lobbying for interventions, maintaining relationships with relevant agencies and ensuring that the concerns of one’s people reach the appropriate authorities.

That was Atuma’s first major political test—and he passed through the National Assembly as an elected representative.

2007: HE STEPPED INTO THE GOVERNORSHIP CONTEST

Atuma’s political ambition did not end with his first term in the House of Representatives. In 2007, he entered the wider Abia governorship contest.

This is another important point for those attempting to rewrite his political biography.

A politician who has participated in a governorship contest has already operated at a completely different level of political engagement. Governorship politics requires statewide consultations, organisation, political negotiation, grassroots mobilisation and an understanding of the interests of multiple constituencies.

Atuma was therefore not an outsider looking through the window of Abia politics. He was already inside the political arena, competing for the highest elective office in the state.

THE POLITICAL JOURNEY CONTINUED

Atuma’s political engagement did not disappear after his governorship ambition. His political career continued through subsequent electoral contests and political activities, including the senatorial ambition associated with the Abia Central Senatorial District.

More importantly, his political relevance survived periods outside elective office.

And this is where the “rookie” argument collapses completely.

A rookie normally needs political office to become politically relevant. Atuma remained politically engaged even when he was outside office.

He continued to maintain relationships, engage communities and pursue opportunities capable of benefiting his people. His supporters point to his efforts in facilitating federal opportunities, employment and development interventions even during periods when he was not occupying an elected position.

That is political resilience.

That is grassroots commitment.

That is political longevity.

THE REAL TEST OF A POLITICIAN IS WHAT HAPPENS AFTER OFFICE

There are politicians whose names disappear immediately after they leave office.

There are others whose relevance depends entirely on the government position they occupy.

Then there are those who remain connected to their people because their relationship with the grassroots was never built solely around an office.

Atuma belongs in the third category.

His years away from the National Assembly did not erase his political network or his connection with the people. Instead, they demonstrated something important: political service, at its best, is a commitment rather than a four-year contract.

That is why reducing his political history to the word “rookie” is not merely unfair—it is historically indefensible.

WHAT HAS ATUMA ACTUALLY DONE?

The conversation about Atuma should be based on his record, not on convenient political labels.

Among the interventions associated with his period of representation are:

– Road rehabilitation and renovation projects within his constituency.
– School renovation and educational infrastructure interventions.
– Erosion-control interventions aimed at communities affected by environmental degradation.
– Streetlight projects to improve public infrastructure and community safety.
– Efforts to attract federal development interventions to Ikwuano/Umuahia.
– Continued engagement toward securing federal employment and opportunities for constituents even outside elective office.

These are the issues that deserve serious political debate.

If anybody believes Atuma’s record is inadequate, let the evidence be presented.

If anybody believes another candidate is better qualified, let that candidate’s record be placed side by side with Atuma’s.

But don’t call a former federal lawmaker, former governorship aspirant and veteran political actor a rookie simply because you disagree with his current political ambition.

2027: WHY ATUMA IS A STRONG OPTION FOR ABIA CENTRAL

The 2027 Abia Central Senatorial election requires more than noise, slogans and social-media popularity.

It requires experience.

It requires legislative understanding.

It requires grassroots relationships.

It requires political maturity.

It requires somebody who understands how government works and knows how to translate constituency demands into federal interventions.

It requires somebody who has already walked the corridors of the National Assembly and understands the difference between making promises and navigating the legislative and executive processes required to deliver results.

On those criteria, Atuma brings something significant to the table: experience accumulated over more than two decades of political participation.

His recent emergence as the APC candidate for Abia Central is therefore not the beginning of his political career; it is another chapter in an already established political journey. Recent reporting on the APC primary identified Atuma as the party’s Abia Central nominee for the 2027 general election and recorded his victory over other aspirants.

THE CHOICE BEFORE ABIA CENTRAL

Politics is ultimately about choice.

Nobody should be forced to support a candidate simply because he has experience. Experience must be accompanied by capacity, accessibility, vision, integrity and the willingness to serve.

But those same standards must be applied honestly.

If the question is whether Rt. Hon. Emeka Atuma has political experience, the answer is unequivocally yes.

If the question is whether he understands constituency representation, his record in the House of Representatives provides an important basis for that assessment.

If the question is whether he understands electoral politics, his participation in major electoral contests provides the answer.

If the question is whether he has remained politically engaged outside office, his continued activities and political relevance provide evidence of resilience.

And if the question is whether he should be dismissed as a “rookie,” the answer is even simpler:

Absolutely not.

LET US DEBATE ATUMA ON FACTS, NOT LABELS

Rt. Hon. Emeka Atuma should not be presented as a perfect politician, because no serious politician is beyond scrutiny. His record should be examined. His plans for Abia Central should be interrogated. His capacity should be tested. His promises should be measured against realistic expectations.

But fair political criticism must begin with historical accuracy.

You cannot erase 2003–2007.

You cannot erase a National Assembly record.

You cannot erase the governorship contest.

You cannot erase years of political engagement.

You cannot erase constituency interventions.

You cannot erase the relationships he built with the grassroots.

And you certainly cannot erase all of that history by simply attaching the word “rookie” to his name.

Atuma is not a political newcomer. He is a tested political actor seeking another opportunity to serve.

For Abia Central, the real question should therefore be bigger than personalities and political propaganda:

Who has the experience, legislative exposure, grassroots reach, political maturity and capacity to aggressively represent Abia Central at the National Assembly?

That is where Rt. Hon. Emeka Atuma makes a compelling case.

He has been in the trenches.
He has served.
He has contested.
He has experienced victory and political setbacks.
He has remained standing.
He has remained connected to his people.
And he is still seeking opportunities to serve.

That is not the profile of a rookie.

That is the profile of a seasoned politician seeking a fresh mandate to represent his people.

The people of Abia Central deserve a Senator who will not need four years to learn how the National Assembly works. They deserve somebody who understands the terrain, understands representation and can hit the ground running.

Rt. Hon. Emeka Atuma comes to the contest with history, experience and a record that deserves to be judged on its merits.

The debate should therefore not be “rookie or veteran?”

The debate should be: who is best prepared to represent Abia Central, attract development, defend the interests of the people and deliver effective legislative representation?

On that question, Rt. Hon. Emeka Atuma has a serious case to make.

ABIA CENTRAL NEEDS EXPERIENCE.
ABIA CENTRAL NEEDS CAPACITY.
ABIA CENTRAL NEEDS ACCESSIBILITY.
ABIA CENTRAL NEEDS EFFECTIVE REPRESENTATION.

And that is why Rt. Hon. Emeka Atuma deserves serious consideration for the Abia Central Senatorial District seat in 2027.
