2026 WORLD IGBO DAY: Gov. Alex Otti Hosts Apex Igbo Leadership In Umuahia, Charges Ndigbo On Strategic Unity And Youth Development

UMUAHIA- The capital of Abia State, Umuahia, stood still as Governor Alex Chioma Otti hosted Igbo leaders, governors, delegates, and socio-cultural groups from across the federation for the grand finale of the 2026 World Igbo Day Celebration.

Delivering his address titled “Ndigbo, History and the Dreams of Tomorrow,” Governor Otti praised the resilience, ingenuity, and courageous spirit of Ndigbo, noting that despite traveling to all corners of the globe, the Igbo person remains deeply connected to ancestral roots and collective development.

Governor Otti commended the leadership of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohaneze Ndigbo, led by President-General Distinguished Senator John Azuta-Mbata, for their steadfastness in organizing the annual gathering to foster unity and preserve Igbo heritage.

Addressing the central theme of the 2026 celebration, Njiko Ka (Unity is Supreme), Governor Otti emphasized that the traditional Igbo republican mindset must not be confused with selfishness. He declared that the era of individualistic pursuits at the expense of the collective good—traditionally described as Ikeotuonye—must give way to an era of strategic consensus and unity (Njikoka).

“Our progress will be stalled if we do not come together as a people united by a common heritage and driven by the hunger to leave a better community for our children,” Governor Otti stated. “Unity does not mean unanimity of opinion on every issue, but a consciousness that our individual desires cannot be superior to the aspirations of the majority.”

Highlighting strategic steps for future advancement, the Governor commended former Central Bank Deputy Governor, Professor Kingsley Chiedu Moghalu, for delivering a brilliant keynote lecture and leading the committee that drafted the Igbo Charter for Strategic Engagement for National Development. Otti expressed confidence that the framework will guarantee clearly defined political and economic outcomes for Ndigbo in the emerging global economy.

Governor Otti also drew attention to three timeless cultural institutions that have sustained Igbo society: the tradition of Omugwo, the Igbo apprenticeship system, and an unyielding commitment to education regardless of socioeconomic status.

Concluding his address, the Governor issued a firm charge to Igbo leaders and parents to protect the next generation by confronting societal vices head-on. He called for urgent, collective action against the rising menace of substance abuse among young people, urging a return to foundational values of moderation, patience, and academic excellence.
