Tinubu Approves ₦46bn for Second Runway at Kano International Airport.

President Bola Tinubu has approved the sum of ₦46 billion for the construction of a second runway at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport, in a move aimed at expanding the airport’s capacity and strengthening aviation infrastructure in northern Nigeria.

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, announced the approval during an inspection visit to the airport. He described the project as a clear demonstration of the Federal Government’s commitment to modernising Nigeria’s aviation sector and improving air transport infrastructure across the country.

According to the minister, the construction of the additional runway will ease aircraft movement, enhance operational efficiency, and accommodate the increasing volume of domestic and international flights operating through the Kano airport. He noted that the project is expected to improve safety, reduce congestion, and support the long-term growth of the aviation industry.

Keyamo further explained that the runway project is part of the Federal Government’s broader aviation development agenda, which includes upgrading critical airport infrastructure nationwide, improving passenger experience, and ensuring compliance with international aviation safety standards.

He expressed optimism that the project would stimulate economic activities, promote trade and investment, and further position Kano as a major aviation and commercial hub in northern Nigeria.

The minister added that construction will commence after the completion of the required procurement and contractual processes. He assured stakeholders that the Federal Government is committed to ensuring the project is executed in accordance with approved standards and delivered to meet global aviation best practices.
