Police Clarify IGP’s Remarks, Deny ‘Shoot-On-Sight’ Order Against Illegal Firearm Carriers

THE Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has dismissed reports claiming that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, ordered security operatives to shoot on sight individuals found carrying illegal firearms, describing such reports as misleading and taken out of context.

The clarification was contained in a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, following the circulation of viral social media posts alleging that the police chief had authorised a blanket use of lethal force against persons in possession of unlicensed weapons.

According to the police, the IGP’s remarks were distorted, leading to widespread misunderstanding among members of the public.

“The report, which has gone viral on social media, was taken out of context and twisted to mislead the public,” the statement said.

The Force Headquarters explained that at no point did the IGP issue a directive ordering officers to summarily execute individuals carrying illegal firearms. Rather, IGP Disu had reiterated the need for police personnel to remain vigilant and proactive in tackling violent crimes, including armed robbery, kidnapping, banditry, cultism and terrorism, while operating within the provisions of the law.

The police noted that the IGP’s comments were intended to reinforce existing operational guidelines aimed at combating insecurity across the country and should not be interpreted as an endorsement of extrajudicial actions.

The statement further emphasised that the use of force by police officers is governed by the Constitution, the Nigeria Police Act and established Rules of Engagement, which permit the use of lethal force only under specific circumstances, particularly when it is necessary to protect lives or prevent serious threats to public safety.

The Force warned against the spread of misinformation capable of creating panic, eroding public trust and misrepresenting the position of law enforcement authorities.

It also urged journalists, social media users and members of the public to verify information through official channels before disseminating reports relating to security matters.

The police reaffirmed their commitment to upholding the rule of law, protecting the rights of citizens and ensuring that all operations are conducted in line with internationally accepted standards of policing.

The clarification comes amid ongoing efforts by security agencies to curb the proliferation of illegal firearms and address security challenges in various parts of the country, including banditry, kidnapping and armed attacks. The Police Force maintained that while it remains resolute in confronting criminal elements, all actions by officers must be guided by legal procedures and respect for human rights.
