Atiku: Tinubu Has Lost Control as Nigeria’s Debt Hits ₦12.62 Trillion

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has accused President Bola Tinubu of losing control of governance following reports that Nigeria’s public debt increased by ₦12.62 trillion within the first quarter of 2026.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Atiku said the rising debt profile reflects what he described as poor fiscal management and worsening economic conditions under the current administration. He argued that despite increased borrowing, many Nigerians continue to struggle with inflation, high living costs, unemployment, and declining purchasing power.

The former presidential candidate questioned the government’s borrowing strategy, saying Nigerians deserve greater transparency on how the funds are being utilized and the economic benefits expected from the loans. He warned that the country’s growing debt burden could place additional pressure on future generations if not properly managed.

Atiku called on the Tinubu administration to adopt policies that would stimulate economic growth, improve revenue generation, and reduce dependence on borrowing. The Presidency had not issued an official response to his remarks at the time of reporting.
